Thoughts of a Chinese Adoptee

I was told my Chinese name that my orphanage in Guixi, China meant beautiful, lucky girl. I’ve been told by numerous people that I’m so lucky to have been adopted in America. I’ve even been told, ” you would’ve just grown up poor or a rice farmer if you have stayed in China”. Luck is a funny word to describe adoption. Luck is defined as “success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions.” I am lucky in some ways and I acknowledge that. I am lucky to have been raised by parents who love me. I am lucky to have been able to go to a private university. I am lucky that I grew up in a safe and healthy household.
